Vintage Wooden Stair Gate – DIY Stair Gate

1

This gate wasn’t built for looks even though it ended up looking awesome, it was built to block out my German Shepherd puppy! Lets just say that didn’t last long and we ended up just keeping it because it looked so cool.

Full dimensions ( this will be determined by the dimensions of your stairway). These were mine:

36 1/2″ X 31 1/2

1 – 5/8″ Plywood cut to size.

I used this to be used as a backing or support.

Frame
2 – 31 1/2″ 1×4
2 – 29 3/4″ 1×4
2 – 36″ 1×4 for X

Posts
2 – 35″ 2×4 (you can cut height of posts to anything you want)

Top Shelf
1 – 36 1/2″
2 – 1×4 cut into triangles

Next I used some home made stain which consisted of white vinegar and steel wool. I put those in a mason jar and let it sit for a few days. The longer it sits, the darker it becomes!.

This is what it looked like dried with no seal.

I could have left it but I decided to put a protective sealant on it.

This worked for about a couple months before she got big enough to jump it!
